Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Choke Release -- intermediate step

BJJ Choke Release

Having some fun with choke releases on the ground. This is a common martial arts technique that comes up in self defense situations, and is also a bread-and-butter in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and in Okinawan Karate (as we teach in our dojo in San Diego)

Starting with the aggressor in the mount position and choking us, our first order of business is to protect our airway:

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Choke Release -- attack

Next, we initiate the sweep escape from the mount:

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Choke Release -- intermediate step

..and we complete the sweep:

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Choke Release -- finish

At class we showed follow through techniques that allow us to get up safely so we can leave the threat area. In a self-defense situation you generally want to minimize the amount of time you are on the ground.

Now go and practice! Be careful and have fun!

Stay tuned — in a future post we will cover releases from the Rear Naked Choke (RNC).
