Martial Arts Word of the Month for November 2012

Shoshin

Shoshin, “beginner’s mind”.

In martial arts, we seek to cultivate a beginner’s mind – an attitude of openness and lack of preoccupation when studying a subject – even a subject in which we have a great deal of prior knowledge.

Can you reincarnate the curious learning of a child? Can you listen to viewpoints without immediately analyzing whether you agree or disagree with them?

Practicing Shoshin allows us to optimally learn from the world.

In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, in the expert’s mind there are few.“ Shunryu Suzuki
